Henry Grave is an investigator for the Association of Cruising Vessel Operators. A World War II P.O.W., Henry is as cunning as he is charming, and at 84 years of age, he fits right in with his fellow passengers. The cruising yacht Vesper is anchored off the Greek island of Thera, in the caldera of an ancient volcano when Henry comes aboard. An Egyptian federal agent was onboard to guard a valuable Minoan cup, but the agent was murdered and the cup, stolen. With the help of a Nicaraguan soap opera star, a New Age spiritualist, and a blind pickpocket, Henry draws on skills honed in a Nazi prison camp to track down a killer who might have his own reasons for taking this particular cruise, reasons unrelated to the sumptuous meals, delightful shipboard activities, and exciting ports of call.

I have now read several from this series. A good series....humor inserted around a serious theme. This one had a serious theme that almost ended with the bad guy getting away with it...almost, almost but probably not. Henry is an 84 year old investigator of crime on cruise ships. He looks at live through a prism sometimes....to see the funny side of life. It's his way of hiding the bad times he endured back in his young days...back when he was a WW2 prisoner of war in a German stalag and almost starved to death. Life is much better for him now. He meets many nice people on cruise ships and an occasional murderer. He catches those before the ship reaches port - at least that's the plan. This time he had to watch the murder talk his way out of it...almost.Product details

Mediterranean Grave edition by William Doonan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Henry Grave is an inspector for crime on cruise ships. He is in his eighties and still working. He is investigating the theft of an antique cup and the murder of a policeman on cruise ship. The writing is good and the mistakes are minimal. There is so much extraneous descriptions of things that have nothing to do with the plot/story line that the flow of the actual plot/story bogs down to a standstill. I quickly got bored with the book and quit after reading 30% of it. The author is actually a good writer who needs to focus on the plot and not all the extra stuff. I felt as though he was trying to make the story longer by putting in all the worthless extras. Not worth my time.
Henry Grave is back, this time on a pocket cruise ship in the Greek Archipelago. The case is a murdered Egyptian security chief and a missing ancient artifact. Once again, Doonan has provided us with a compelling mystery and a cast of curious and idiosyncratic characters. Grave is his usual charming, quirky, confident and very cool and in-charge self. I like Grave because he's what Parker's Spenser might have been as a senior citizen. And if he had become a maritime consultant and archeology expert instead of a super fan of professional sports and fine wine. Anyway, both Grave and Spenser are very much at home with booze, broads and guns. I need that in a P.I. The last thing I want to read is a book about a politically correct private dick. A P.C.P.I.
OK, so, this book isn't quite as good as the first book but it's still worthy of four and a half stars. (I gave Grave Passage 5 stars.) I say not quite as good because in the first book, Grave Passage, we get a taste of Grave's humor and quirkiness right from the start. This one has a little bit more of a buildup, and maybe it's not quite as funny, or maybe it doesn't seem as funny because it's not as fresh as the first. I laughed out loud on numerous occasions reading Grave Passage. This one made me smile and I think I laughed out loud only twice. Also, Grave Passage had the excitement of being an introduction and almost perfect and this one is, well, not perfect. It has maybe two places where Doonan could have used another edit. For example, a character is described as sipping from a cup of coffee, and then two paragraphs later Donnan has a waiter bring the character a cup of coffee. Minor stuff.
Another thing, if you read a lot of mysteries or watch a lot of detective stories on TV or in movies you might see through the thinner veil of deception and criminal intrigue being spun here. You also might see the shadow of the author's crutch. Crutch might be too strong a word. Let's just say it's more than a stylistic signature and less than a basic outline. Parker had one for Spenser, so why can't Doonan have one for the Grave Mysteries? You want a familiar theme, characters, POV and setting when you revisit your favorite novels. It's the plot that has to be different. I'm not saying Mediterranean Grave is cliche, just that it has elements of plot that are not unique to the genre. In fact, what makes this novel 4-1/2 stars for me is that it has great characters and great dialogue.
I love Henry Grave. He's tough, sensible, confident, seriously flawed, takes numerous naps, loves to eat and charm women. He can't shoot straight. He's constantly on the prowl. He drinks like a sailor, has a fabulous backstory. He's heroic, forgiving, enthralling, righteous without being sanctimonious. He manages a roller derby team and solves mysteries at sea. How cool is that?
This is the third Henry Grave mystery I have read by this author. All of them were strangely unique and written with great humor. Here you have an 80 plus year old man that is underestimated by most people he meets. He appears to approach each problem with putting his own needs before his job. You have him taking naps and seeking food and drinks during most of his "working" hours. The reader soon finds that Henry sees himself as a great lover and world champion tango dancer and guess what? He convinced me! His character would appear to be that of a friendly, clumsy and naive old man, but you soon find out there is a very clever and dangerous person underneath this role. It is somewhat similar to the character Peter Falk played in the Columbo episodes. He appears inept at everything he does, to include misplacing his investigator credentials each time he introduces himself. I think anyone interested in humorous detective novels and cruise ship settings would enjoy this novel. I have no hesitation giving all three of these novels a five star rating.
